Pixlr Doesn't Run - I'm Seeing A DirectX Error

For Windows users, Pixlr for desktop requires DirectX version 11 or higher. Most systems should already be running this; however, if you've gotten this error, you either have an older machine or OS and must update it to use this version of Pixlr. Here is a link to the Pixlr system requirements.

What do I do?

Usually, you can fix this by updating your graphics driver. You can do the following:

  • Go to the support website from your computer manufacturer or go directly to the driver downloads for your graphics hardware.
  • Follow the guide for Windows 7 and 8. These will help you to identify and manually install the latest graphics driver for the 3 main driver providers.

STEP 1. HOW TO FIND YOUR GRAPHICS DRIVER VERSION

To find out what brand of graphics card you have and the driver version, right-click on the Windows desktop and look for any of the following in the menu that appears.

NVIDIA GRAPHICS

  1. If you have an NVIDIA graphics, select NVIDIA Control Panel.
  2. In the bottom left corner, click the System Information link.
  3. In the Display tab, in the Items column, your GPU is listed. In the Details column, the driver version is listed.

AMD/ATI GRAPHICS

  1. If you have AMD/ATI graphics, select AMD Catalyst Control Center.
  2. Do one of the following:
    • If the AMD Catalyst Control Center is in Standard View mode, scroll down to Information, select Product Summary, then select Hardware. The Graphics Chipset should indicate the model of the graphics card.
    • If the AMD Catalyst Control Center is in Advance View mode, in the left side menu, click the Information tab, the Hardware. The Graphics Chipset should indicate the model of the graphics card.

INTEL GRAPHICS

  1. When you right-click on the Windows desktop, select Graphics Properties to open the Intel Graphics Control Panel.
  2. Do one of the following:
    • If you are running one of the latest drivers, you will see Options. Click Options, then select Information Center. The driver version will be listed under Driver Version.
    • If you are running one of the older drivers, you will see Options & Support. Click Options & Support > Information Center. The driver version will be listed under System Information. For example: 8.15.10.2639.

 

STEP 2. DOWNLOAD THE LATEST DRIVERS

Once you have identified the brand of graphics card and driver version, go to the manufacturer's support website to search for and download their latest driver. Take note of the download location, so you can find the driver once it is downloaded to your computer.

 

STEP 3. INSTALLING THE LATEST DRIVERS

Once you have determined your driver is out-of-date and have downloaded the latest driver, you are ready to install it. 

  1. Verify you've logged in with an Administrative Privileges account (if you haven't, a prompt will appear letting you know).
  2. Close all applications, including any live monitoring anti-virus, firewall, remote-access, or webcam software, before attempting to install the driver.
  3. Double-click the driver installation file. A prompt appears. Click Run to start the installation procedure.

NOTE: A Windows User Account Control (UAC) prompt may appear asking, "Do you want to allow the following program to make changes to this computer?"  Select Yes to continue with the installation.

  1. Follow the prompts.

    NOTE: It's best to use default or recommended settings; otherwise, consult the manufacturer’s support website for additional information.

  2. When prompted, reboot your machine to complete the process.
